EU's number one diplomat Josep Borrell arrived on a visit to Kyiv, reported France Press, quoted by BTA.

The purpose of his visit is to reassure Ukraine of continued European support for it against Russia at a time when Donald Trump was elected president in the United States, raising fears that he could reduce or suspend American support for the Eastern European country. reported France Press. This is the first visit of a European representative to Kyiv after the election of Trump.

"The message is clear - the Europeans will continue to support Ukraine," said Borel, whose mandate expires next month.

"We supported Ukraine from the beginning, and on the occasion of my last visit to Ukraine, I also convey a message - we will support you as much as we can," said Borel.

"No one knows exactly what the new American administration will do," added the EU's number one diplomat and recalled that Democrat Joe Biden will be in power for another two months to make the relevant decisions.

"We Europeans must use this occasion to build a stronger and more united Europe and one of the manifestations of our unity, our strength and our ability to act is our role in the support of Ukraine", Borel said.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Europe has spent about $125 billion in support of Ukraine, while the United States alone has allocated more than $90 billion, according to Germany's Kiel Institute for the World Economy

Continued support from the US, which is Ukraine's biggest donor, is seen by most experts as crucial for Kiev to stay afloat, especially at a time of political uncertainty among major European powers Germany and France.

On the battlefield, Ukrainian troops struggle to repel Russian advances, and the third year of the war is approaching.

Borel, who during his visit to Kyiv will meet with senior Ukrainian representatives, said that EU countries must decide “when and how to increase” your support if needed.

He said that at the meeting of EU leaders in Budapest on Friday, “most member states have remained in the same position, which is to continue supporting Ukraine”.
