Greece is in talks with Israel to develop a two billion euro air defense system as part of its military modernization efforts forces, Reuters agency reported, citing Greek official sources.
The system will most likely resemble Israel's “Iron Dome” and other similar systems that intercept short- and long-range rockets fired by neighboring countries during the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, the agency said.
Greece is looking to invest in its defense to keep up with its NATO ally and historic rival Turkey, which is also developing its own air defenses despite some improvement in their relations, Reuters notes.
„The plan is to create a multi-layer defense against missiles and drones,”, a source familiar with the matter told the agency after a closed-door briefing with Defense Minister Nikos Dendias. The source added that talks are underway with Israel.
A second source confirmed the target of the potential deal, adding that Greece would have to spend 12.8 billion euros by 2035 to modernize its armed forces.
The air defense plans are part of a 10-year military procurement plan that includes up to 40 new US F-35 fighter jets and drones, as well as four Bellara frigates. and Rafale fighter jets from France.
Greece currently uses the American “Patriot” system to protect its airspace. and old Russian S-300 systems, Reuters recalls.
