Half of the Ukrainian children who left the country because of the war are not enrolled in the education system of the host country.
Such a worrying trend shows a new Council of Europe report cited by SIR (Servizio Informazione Religiosa).
Since February 24, 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale unprovoked war, 6.5 million people have left Ukraine, 40% of whom are school-age children or youth. Germany and Poland are the countries that accepted the largest number of Ukrainians.
“It is time to move from emergency solutions to more permanent and long-term measures”, is the main conclusion of the report. 60% of children who go to school attend online courses broadcast from Ukraine.
The first recommendation to member states is to work so that Ukrainian parents and guardians are aware of the benefits of in-person education. Also recommended is a “whole school approach” to create an inclusive environment so that Ukrainian students can integrate more easily.
