Finland has restored the submarine fiber optic cable connecting the country to Germany - 1

Finnish technology company Cinia has announced that it has fully restored the underwater fiber optic cable "Sea-Lion 1" (C-Lion1), which was discontinued on November 18. The cable plays a key role in providing digital connectivity between Finland and Germany, Reuters and BTA reported.

Suspected sabotage

On November 17 and 18, two submarine cables were damaged – "Sea-Lion 1" and another connecting Sweden and Lithuania. According to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, there is a possibility that the cause was sabotage.

Among the suspects is the crew of a Chinese cargo ship that dropped anchor near the location of the incident.

The second cable has also been restored

The operator company Arelion reported that the damaged cable between Sweden and Lithuania is also now operational.

Reaction from China

Swedish authorities have asked Beijing for assistance in investigating the incidents. In response, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said today that China is ready to cooperate in clarifying the circumstances surrounding the damage.

The submarine cable incidents highlight the growing vulnerability of the global digital infrastructure and the potential threat of targeted sabotage. Rebuilding the cables is key to ensuring stable connectivity between Northern Europe and the rest of the continent.
