Resident of Texas Kevin Daniel Loftus tried to leave the United States to participate in military operations in Ukraine on the side of the Russian armed forces, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Loftus, 56, was involved in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, for which he was sentenced to three years of probation in March 2022. However, on October 28, 2024 he tried to fly to Turkey, from where he planned to reach Georgia and get a visa to Russia for 90 days, the newspaper said. He was denied boarding because the terms of his probation prohibit him from leaving the city of Dallas, Texas, without special permission.
Loftus is said to have been in contact with a “resident of Russia named Grisha” who was supposed to find him a job in the Russian armed forces.
The American was detained in Iowa a few days after he tried to fly to Turkey.
