The Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the first round of the presidential elections in the country. Magistrates made the decision after an emergency meeting held earlier today, local media reported. The government must now determine a new calendar for the presidential elections, the magistrates said, BTA reports.
This means that the entire process for the presidential elections starts all over again, comments Digi24.
As BTA informs, the judges of the Constitutional Court of Romania met in an extraordinary meeting after the institution received a large number of new requests for cashing in the presidential elections. The requests refer to documents declassified by Romania's Supreme Council of National Defense, which say presidential candidate Calin Georgescu's campaign was the result of manipulation conducted outside the country.
Today's meeting of the Constitutional Court of Romania was described by the local media as "unprecedented".
Meanwhile, Romanian citizens with the right to vote from the diaspora started voting today in the second round of the presidential elections. About 33,000 people have voted so far, Hotnews points out. There are 950 organized sections abroad.
