South Korea's prosecutors today ordered ousted president Yun Suk-yeol to appear for questioning by Saturday in connection with his failed attempt to impose martial law or an arrest warrant will be issued against him, the state news agency Yonhap reported, quoted by Agence France-Presse and BTA.
The ousted president has been refusing to respond to court summonses since Sunday. A team of investigators from the police, the anti-corruption agency and the defense ministry, which is leading a second investigation, asked Yun Suk-yeol to answer their questions in writing by tomorrow, but their request was rejected by the ousted leader's office, Yonhap reported.
Yun, who was removed from office after an impeachment on Saturday, is being investigated for sedition. In the late hours of December 3, he unexpectedly declared martial law and sent the army into parliament, then had to reverse his decision before dawn under pressure from the National Assembly and protesters.
Now the 63-year-old former prosecutor general, along with his allies who participated in imposing martial law, face life in prison and even the death penalty if found guilty of "sedition". He is banned from leaving the country.
Meanwhile, investigators began searching the offices of ousted President Yoon Suk-yeol's security service today. They are "trying to obtain phone records (contained) in the servers" of the presidential security offices, Yonhap reported.
