Turkey rejected the comments of the newly elected US president Donald Trump, who described the rebels' victory in Syria as a “hostile takeover“ by Ankara, BTA reported.
“It would be a serious mistake to describe what is happening in Syria as a seizure of power“, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in an interview with “Al Jazeera“.
“For the Syrian people, this is not a seizure of power. "This is the will of the Syrian people who are taking power today," he added.
Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia after a blitzkrieg led by the Islamist group "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham" toppled him earlier this month.
Since the start of the uprising in 2011, Turkey has been seen as a key supporter of the opposition to his regime. It has taken in the political opposition and millions of refugees, and has also supported armed rebel groups, AFP said.
For the head of Turkish diplomacy, it would be a mistake to believe that Turkey is the power that will rule Syria after the conflict.
