A hypothetical annexation of Greenland to the US under the rule of the newly elected US President Donald Trump would have catastrophic consequences for NATO. The commentary is from the newspaper The Hill.
„Trump's seizure of Greenland over the objections of NATO member Denmark would spell the end of NATO, since no alliance can survive if its leading power violates the territorial integrity of another member“, the publication writes.
In recent history „the only country that has violated Denmark's sovereignty is Hitler's Germany“, emphasizing that „America should not seek to stand on its equal“. At the same time, according to The Hill, such a step by the Trump administration could be used by China as an excuse for a hypothetical “invasion of Taiwan“.
During Trump's first presidential term in 2019, American media wrote that he was interested in the possibility of acquiring Greenland, which is a territory within Denmark and has broad rights of autonomy. Then the authorities of the kingdom refused to discuss the sale of Greenland, calling the idea absurd.
In December 2024, Trump said that Washington should control Greenland. The United States believes that “ownership and control” over Greenland are absolutely necessary, he wrote on his page on the social network Truth Social. In response, the island's Prime Minister Mute Egede emphasized: “We are not for sale and we will never be for sale”.
