Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez, who claims to have defeated President Nicolas Maduro in last year's presidential election, announced today that his son-in-law was kidnapped in the capital Caracas. This became clear through a post by Gonzalez on the social network "Ex", the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.

Gonzalez announced that Rafael Tudares, his son-in-law, was kidnapped this morning while taking his two grandchildren to school in the capital. According to the opposition leader, "hooded men dressed in black" stopped Tudares' car and took him "into a gold-colored minibus".

Gonzalez did not provide details about the condition of the children, ages 6 and 7, who were with Tudares at the time of the incident.

The government press service has not yet responded to an AP request for comment on the incident.

The kidnapping comes at a time of rising tension in the country, just days before the start of a new presidential term on Friday.
