The US Department of Homeland Security has halted some programs that allow migrants to temporarily settle in the country, including the "Unite for Ukraine" initiative, which allows entry to Ukrainians who have a sponsor in the United States, the New York Times reported.
According to the publication, an email sent on January 23 by the head of US Citizenship and Immigration Services contains an instruction to stop the final review of applications under these programs. The decision was made as part of a review of their legality and possible termination.
The newspaper writes that the "Unity for Ukraine" program, launched under the Biden administration, has allowed more than 150,000 Ukrainians to enter the United States.
Trump administration officials have said that many of the programs were initially not in compliance with the law. The president signed an executive order calling for the termination of programs that he said were not in line with the new US immigration policy.
