The Italian ship "Libra" with 49 asylum seekers on board is expected to arrive today from the island of Lampedusa in the Albanian port of Shenzhen, the "Albanian Daily News" reported, quoted by BTA.
The agreement between Albania and Italy to accept asylum seekers is expected to resume this week after it was suspended for two months due to a court ruling.
Italian judges have refused to confirm the detention of the first two small groups of asylum seekers taken to Albania under the Rome-Tirana agreement, referring their cases to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
In December, the government in Rome tried to circumvent this obstacle with a government decision that included 19 safe countries, including Bangladesh and Egypt, and the Supreme Court ruled that the government has the right to impose specific conditions on asylum applications from countries considered safe.
Under the five-year agreement signed in November 2023, by the Prime Ministers of Italy and Albania, Giorgia Meloni and Edi Rama, up to 3,000 migrants a month, found by the Italian coast guard in international waters, will be accommodated in two centers in Albania while their asylum applications are processed by the Italian authorities.
