Iran has not “exchanged messages“ with the US since Donald Trump returned to power - architect of the “maximum pressure“ policy on Tehran during his first term, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht Ravanchi said today, quoted by the state news agency ISNA, BTA reports.

“Only a few days have passed since the new US administration came to power and there have been no messages exchanged between Iran and the US“, Ravanchi said.

In 2018 Trump withdrew Washington from the international agreement signed three years ago on Iran's nuclear program, which included easing sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear ambitions.

With Trump's return, "we have to prepare for the worst," Ravanchi warned, but stressed that it would be necessary to wait and see whether the new US president would fulfill the promises he made during his election campaign.

On Thursday, Trump expressed the opinion that strikes on Iranian nuclear sites should be avoided, stressing that he hoped for an agreement with Tehran.

"We will act according to the policies of the other side when they are announced," Ravanchi added.

Tehran has said it is willing to resume negotiations to renew the agreement, asserting its right to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and denies any intention to build nuclear weapons, despite Western doubts.
