Poland, Canada deepen nuclear partnership - 1

Poland and Canada have reached an agreement on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said after a meeting with his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The agreement provides a legal framework for expanding the partnership between the two countries in the strategic sector.

Poland, which is actively seeking alternatives to coal, has already selected “Westinghouse Electric“ - a company with Canadian participation - to build its first nuclear power plant on the Baltic Sea coast. However, financing the project remains partly an unresolved issue. In addition, the country plans to soon start selecting a partner for a second nuclear power plant.

“Canada is our key partner, as “Westinghouse“ is under Canadian ownership. Cooperation in the field of small nuclear reactors also plays a big role in our strategy“, Tusk stressed.

In 2023, Poland approved plans to build 24 small modular reactors at six different sites, revealed “Orlen Sintos Green Energy“ (OSGE) – a joint venture between “Orlen“, Poland's largest oil refiner, and the chemical company “Sintos“. The first small reactors will be put into operation by 2030.

In addition to energy, Poland is focusing its efforts on positioning itself as a leader in new technologies. The prime minister said the country needs reliable energy sources to build data centers and innovation:

“I met with the head of “Google“, who pointed out that Poland should become a European center for artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. However, this requires significant new energy resources,“ Tusk pointed out.

With ambitions to be a European model for innovation and technology, Poland continues to seek sustainable solutions to its energy and economic needs.
