Today, Greece marked the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, calling for a "widely recognized, just and lasting peace," the online edition of the Kathimerini newspaper reported, BTA reports.
"We are filled with sorrow and respect for the thousands of lives lost, as well as with awe at the unspeakable destruction that is taking place", the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry also expressed solidarity with the ethnic Greek community in Mariupol and the surrounding areas in southeastern Ukraine, stressing that they have experienced "the horrors of war and continue to suffer from its consequences".
Greece reaffirmed its commitment to international law and the principles of the United Nations (UN). "On principles, Greece has always followed international law and the UN Charter, condemning both the use of force and the threat of force against sovereign states", the statement noted.
It stressed that "The only solution is to end the deadly hostilities and establish a widely recognized, just and lasting peace for Ukraine".
The anniversary coincides with a shift in policy towards Ukraine and Russia under the new administration of US President Donald Trump.
