The US believes that one of the conditions that could facilitate the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine could be granting neutral status to the territories around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant with the establishment of Washington's control over them, writes the Wall Street Journal, citing its sources.
The publication does not specify which territories around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant Washington proposes to designate as neutral and in what format the US could exercise control over these territories and the plant. The publication also does not specify who exactly, according to Washington, should manage it if such a proposal is implemented.
The facility is located in the city of Energodar, Zaporizhzhia region. This is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. It was taken under control by Russian forces in late February 2022.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has already stressed that Russia will not transfer the Zaporizhia NPP to Ukraine or any other country.
