Pakistan said it had retaliated against India after a missile attack on three of the country's air bases, "Reuters" reported, quoted by BTA, citing Pakistani state television.

According to the Pakistani army, the targets of the attack were the "BrahMos" missile base, the Pathankot military airport and the Udhampur air base. Witnesses reported multiple explosions in the Indian cities of Amritsar and Jammu.

Earlier, the Pakistani army said India had fired missiles at three of its air bases, including one on the outskirts of Islamabad, and vowed to respond to the attack, AFP reported.

"India fired missiles at "Noor Khan", "Murid" bases and "Chorkot", said army spokesman Lieutenant General Ahmed Chaudhry.

AFP journalists earlier reported hearing two explosions in the vicinity of the capital, which is home to the "Noor Khan" base, as well as the army and intelligence headquarters in the neighboring city of Rawalpindi.

The spokesman said that the missiles fired by India did not hit targets in Pakistani territory.

"I want to inform you of the shocking news that India has fired six ballistic missiles from Adampur. One of the missiles hit Adampur, the remaining five missiles fell in the Amritsar area of Punjab state," the spokesman said in a short video message.

Due to the attack, the country's airspace will remain closed to all flights from 3:15 a.m. to 12 p.m. at noon local time, Pakistani airport authorities said.

The district commissioner of Amritsar in a text message urged people not to panic and issued instructions to "keep lights off and away from windows" as an air raid siren sounded in the city.

Witnesses to Reuters confirmed that four explosions were heard in the city of Amritsar.

Meanwhile, the G7 countries of the world's seven most developed economies called for maximum restraint from both Delhi and Islamabad and encouraged them to engage in dialogue.
