Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan believes that Russia and Ukraine will unite around a compromise in the coming days, the Turkish DHA news agency reported. Fidan made the statement at a press conference in Ankara, commenting on the developments surrounding the two warring countries.
According to the Turkish minister, both sides are also trying to gain the support of the United States.
"Our point of view on the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia has been clear from the beginning," said Hakan Fidan, quoted by the Haberturk television channel. "Turkey is trying to play its role through all its institutions. Last week, our president (Recep Tayyip Erdogan - ed.) had intense diplomatic traffic," he also pointed out, mentioning in particular the phone calls of Recep Tayyip Erdogan with the presidents of the United States, France and Russia.
"There was a proposal from Mr. Putin, encouragement from Mr. Trump and another proposal from Mr. Zelensky. It is of particular importance that Turkey is at the center of them. It is important for us to have peace and stability in our region," Fidan pointed out at the press conference today with the foreign ministers of Jordan and Syria, Ayman Safadi and Asad al-Shibani."
"I think the countries will unite around a compromise in the coming days. Both countries are trying to get the support of the United States. We invite them to start a ceasefire as soon as possible," the Turkish top diplomat also said.
