Iran is expected to participate in nuclear talks with Britain, France and Germany in Turkey today, Agence France-Presse reports. The talks with the so-called European "trio" (E3) will be held in parallel with separate talks between Iran and the United States on the same topic, BTA reports.
The British-French-German group, along with China, Russia and the United States, was part of the negotiation of the nuclear deal with Iran in 2015. It stipulated restrictions on Tehran's nuclear activities in exchange for relief from international sanctions.
However, the agreement was invalidated after the United States unilaterally withdrew from it in 2018, during the presidency of Donald Trump.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has been pushing for a new deal with Tehran. He said yesterday that the United States and Iran are close to an agreement.
According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, today's talks in Istanbul are expected to be held at the level of deputy foreign ministers.
