Trump responded negatively when asked whether the topic of the US side's allegations of Russia developing space-based nuclear weapons was raised in the phone conversation between him and Putin on May 19. “We didn't discuss it. But we will discuss it at the appropriate time“, said the head of the White House. There was no further comment from his side on this issue.
In February 2024 The then-US administration accused Russia of considering deploying nuclear weapons in space. Then-White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in April 2024 that Moscow was developing an anti-satellite weapon capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
Moscow called the accusations "the usual White House tactic" and said "sending nuclear weapons into space is inexpedient from all points of view". Putin stressed that Moscow "has always been categorically against and still is against deploying nuclear weapons in space".
