Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said this morning during his regular weekly interview with the public radio “Lajos Kossuth“ that it is desirable “Ukraine to remain outside the European Union, because if it is admitted, it will absorb all our money“, the Hungarian news agency MTI reported, quoted by BTA.
“For some reason, Western leaders decided to draw up an agreement with Ukraine to maintain an army of about a million soldiers“, Viktor Orban said on the air of “Lajos Kossuth“. The prime minister added that the cost would be borne by the Europeans, as “instead of strengthening its own armed forces, Western Europe pays Ukraine for mercenary services“.
According to Orbán, this would pose a serious risk for Europe, as the continent would end up financing an army whose intentions “will not always be friendly, or at least there will be no guarantee that they will be so“.
“The issue of Ukraine's membership in the EU is related to this, because it is much easier to make financial decisions in favor of Ukraine if the country is inside the EU, instead of outside. That's why we want to keep Ukraine out of the EU, because if we let it in, it will soak up all our money like a sponge," the prime minister said, adding that the price would be paid by Central Europe, including Hungary.
He called on Hungarians to participate in the referendum on Ukraine's potential EU membership.
“Let's not let others decide by skipping over us!“, he urged.
