US President Donald Trump has ordered the construction of at least 10 new nuclear reactors by 2030, the White House press service reported.
According to the document, Trump ordered the start of “construction by 2030 of 10 new reactors based on completed projects“, as well as increasing electricity production from existing reactors by 5 GW. In addition, he instructed the head of the Department of Energy, in coordination with the Secretary of Defense, to assess the possibility of restarting or redirecting the work of closed nuclear power plants for the needs of the Pentagon.
The White House boss ordered the Department of Energy to “prioritize activities in support of nuclear energy“, including by “providing resources to restart closed nuclear power plants, increase energy production at operating nuclear power plants, and complete construction of reactors that were previously shut down“. In addition, Trump instructed the Department of Energy to “establish all aspects of the nuclear fuel supply chain“ and prioritize funding for the development of nuclear energy technologies, including through “grants, loans and venture capital“.
