American leader Donald Trump is trying to concentrate all the power in his hands and is quickly turning the US into an authoritarian state. This opinion was expressed by independent senator Bernie Sanders.
„Our president is quickly leading the country towards authoritarianism. He is suing media outlets that criticize him. He is fighting law firms whose clients have spoken against him. He is fighting universities that teach subjects he does not like. He is threatening to impeach judges who rule against him. He is usurping the power of the US Congress. This is a man who wants all the power, he doesn't believe in the Constitution, he doesn't believe in the rule of law," Sanders said in an interview with CNN.
The lawmaker criticized Trump's decision to bypass local authorities and send 2,000 California National Guard troops to Los Angeles to fight riots that began over mass detentions of illegal immigrants. "As far as I understand, neither California Governor Gavin Newsom nor Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass asked for the National Guard to be deployed there, but Trump believes he has the right to do whatever he wants," Sanders said.
In an interview with ABC in late April, Trump stressed that he was not seeking to concentrate all the power in his hands and become an authoritarian leader. He said that all his actions were aimed solely at "making America great again."
