US President Donald Trump said that Los Angeles has been “safe and calm“ over the past two nights, thanks to the presence of military units in the city, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reports.
“Los Angeles has been safe and calm over the past two nights“, Trump wrote on his social platform "Truth Social", adding: “Without the military, the city would be the scene of crime the likes of which we haven't seen in years.“
In recent days, mass protests have erupted in the metropolis against the Trump administration's immigration policy. The demonstrations escalated into clashes, leading the president to send in the California National Guard and later the U.S. Marine Corps.
The White House's move was met with sharp criticism from California Governor Gavin Newsom and other local officials, who called the federal government's actions a "disproportionate use of force" and a "gross intrusion into the state's authority."
