The Israeli Air Force launched an airstrike on Iranian territory early this morning, the Axios website reported.

It is still unclear what the purpose of the strike was.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that his country had launched a "preemptive strike" against Iran and warned the country's residents of the possibility of an immediate retaliatory attack from Iran. In this regard, he ordered the introduction of a state of emergency in the country.

“Following the preemptive strike by the State of Israel against Iran, an attack using missiles and drones against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the very near future,“ the minister said in a statement quoted by the Ynet portal.

The United States did not participate in the strikes carried out by Israel against Iran and did not provide support to the Jewish state in carrying out the attacks, an American official told CNN journalists.

According to him, "the United States is aware of the strikes, but the United States is not participating in them in any way and is not providing assistance". The White House, State Department and Pentagon have not yet responded to requests for comment on Israel's strikes on Iran.

US President Donald Trump will convene a cabinet meeting in the next few hours to discuss Israel's strike on Iranian territory, CNN reported, citing sources.

"We have been informed that Donald Trump is convening a cabinet-level meeting regarding these preemptive strikes on Iran. This information came from a White House official," the CNN journalist said live on air.

As noted, "the main focus of the meeting will be on the US response to the attack".
