The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, has convened a video conference meeting of EU foreign ministers scheduled for Tuesday.

The escalation of tensions in the Middle East will be discussed during the meeting, Reuters and Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA, citing a spokesperson for Kallas' office.

"In light of the seriousness of the situation in the Middle East, EU High Representative Kaia Kallas has convened a video conference meeting of EU foreign ministers for Tuesday," the spokesperson said.

"The meeting will provide an opportunity to exchange views, coordination of diplomatic contacts with Tel Aviv and Tehran and possible next steps", he added.

The EU calls for de-escalation of the conflict, and is ready "for all diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions and finding a lasting solution to the Iranian nuclear issue".

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about developments in the Middle East, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

In a post on the social network "X" (X), Von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU's commitment to peace, stability and diplomatic efforts leading to de-escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran.

"Europe has always been clear: Iran should never acquire nuclear weapons. There is an urgent need for a negotiated solution," Von der Leyen said.

Yesterday, the EC President announced that she had spoken to Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog, calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint.
