The New York Times: Trump has ordered Witkoff and Vance to hold an emergency meeting with Tehran - 1

US President Donald Trump has suggested that his special envoy Stephen Witkoff and Vice President Vance try to meet with Iranian representatives this week, The New York Times reported, citing its sources.

If the meeting takes place, the Islamic Republic will most likely be represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the newspaper noted.

According to CNN, Trump is urgently trying to find out whether Iran is serious about resolving the conflict with Israel through diplomatic means.

The television company claims that Trump told European leaders at the G-7 summit in Canada that talks on a ceasefire between Iran and Israel are currently underway. The US president has made it clear that he expects a meeting between US and Iranian officials this week.

As CNN notes, after Israel began striking the territory of the Islamic Republic, Trump discreetly asked his team to keep channels of communication open with Iranian representatives and intermediaries.

Meanwhile, Trump called journalist Tucker Carlson "crazy" in response to criticism of his policy.

"Please, someone explain to crazy Tucker Carlson that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons", the president urged on the social network Truth Social.

Earlier, commenting on the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, Carlson said that the possible involvement of the US in an armed conflict with Iran would show the decline of the "American empire".
