Romania will register in the upcoming agricultural season, which will begin on July 1, 2025, its largest wheat production since 1997, which means that for another year Romania will be among the main European exporters, analysts at the consulting firm "Argus Media" predict, quoted by Bloomberg.
After making a tour to assess the state of the crops at the beginning of the month, analysts at "Argus Media" announced on Monday that wheat production in Romania is expected to reach 12.2 million tons in the 2025-2026 season, which begins on July 1, 2025, the American agency noted, quoted by Agerpres.
For comparison, in the current season, Romania's wheat production is estimated at 10.2 million tons.
According to analysts, the increase in production is the result of a better yield per hectare, as well as an increase in sown areas.
Romania's importance in the global wheat market has grown, as evidenced by the fact that the American exchange operator "CME Group" is using prices from Romanian ports, as well as from neighboring Bulgaria, for its new futures contract for wheat from the Black Sea region, after transactions under the previous contract were suspended following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Bloomberg notes.
Data provided by the European Commission show that from the start of the current season to the end of April, Romania’s wheat exports were higher than those of France, which is usually the EU’s largest wheat producer. France’s wheat harvest was affected in 2024. from excessive rainfall, analysts note.
"The wheat harvest in Romania should start in the next four weeks depending on the region - later than last year, because the colder weather has slowed down the development of the plants", the report by "Argus Media" states.
However, "forecasts indicate that the weather will be warmer and drier in the coming weeks - a normal situation for Romania, which will not pose risks to the wheat in the final phase of its development", the analysts add.
