Three people died in a stampede during a religious festival in eastern India, DPA reported, quoted by dariknews.bg.

As a result of the commotion that occurred during the celebration of the Rath Yatra chariot festival in the city of Puri, there is an unspecified number of injuries.

Thousands of people gathered in the city to celebrate the annual festival.

The incident took place near the "Sri Gundicha" temple, towards which a nearly 3-kilometer procession of chariots was moving, NDTV and other media reported, citing authorities. Under the pressure of the ever-growing crowd, many people fell to the ground.

The Chief Minister of the state of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, apologized to the pilgrims on the social network "Ex".

He explained the incident by "unforgivable negligence" in observing safety measures.

Fatal accidents often occur during religious festivals in India. In January, at least 30 people were trampled at the world's largest pilgrimage festival, the Maha Kumbh Mela, in the northern city of Prayagraj.
