US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) will officially terminate all foreign aid programs as of July 1, 2025, as previously announced, reports Focus.
“As of July 1, USAID officially suspends the implementation of foreign aid“, Rubio said in an official statement on Tuesday.
It is noted that all aid programs that are consistent with the current policy of the US authorities will henceforth be implemented directly by the State Department, not by USAID.
The decision to cut comes after the US decided in March to reduce USAID programs by 83% due to excessive costs and inconsistency with national interests.
Earlier this year, some USAID employees were placed on administrative leave for refusing to give employees of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) access to confidential data. The then head of DOGE, Elon Musk, said that the agency should be shut down. According to Musk, President Donald Trump supports this position.
