Authorities in Greece imposed mandatory work breaks today in parts of the country where temperatures are expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius, with the heatwave forecast to last until Thursday, the Associated Press reported.
The Balkan country's labor ministry ordered a work stoppage from noon to 5 p.m. for outdoor physical labor and food delivery services, mainly in central Greece and on several islands. Employers have also been asked to offer remote work options.
No emergency measures have been imposed in Athens and the current heatwave, following sweltering temperatures across Europe, is not considered unusual, the AP said.
Greek authorities say they are taking long-term steps to tackle the effects of climate change, including deploying a record number of firefighters this summer.
