China accused the United States of denying its responsibilities as a major world power after former President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the country from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Newsweek reports, Fokus reports.
Washington is withdrawing from UNESCO, arguing that the organization demonstrates alleged pro-Palestinian and pro-Chinese biases, as well as that it focuses on policies related to diversity, equality and inclusion, which the Trump administration defines as part of the so-called “woke“ culture.
“This is the third time the US has withdrawn from UNESCO. The country has not paid its arrears for a long time. "This is not behavior befitting a major country," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a briefing on July 23.
He also stressed: "China firmly supports the work of UNESCO."
