Germany and its allies are working on the details of reliable security guarantees for Ukraine, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said today, quoted by DPA, BTA reports.
"It is not yet certain what exactly the German contribution to the security guarantees will be and it must be determined from both a political and a military point of view," Pistorius said.
"First we will have to take into account the progress in the negotiations, then the possible contribution of the United States and finally the consultations with our closest partners," he added.
Over the weekend, the question of whether Germany could also send soldiers as part of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine. Security guarantees against further Russian attacks are seen as a key condition for Ukraine to make concessions in the negotiations.
The German government is aware of its responsibility in Europe at the moment, Pistorius said. Germany is already the second-largest supporter of Ukraine, leading in terms of support for air defense and taking political responsibility, he stressed.
Pistorius also mentioned Germany's contribution to the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine and the training of more than 21,000 Ukrainian soldiers.
"It is clear at the moment that we need a strong Ukraine so that it can act with confidence in these difficult negotiations. Only in this way can the current process lead to a lasting and just peace solution," he added.
