A magnitude 5.6 earthquake was recorded on Friday morning in the Myanmar-India border area, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported, News.bg reports.
The quake struck at 04:56 UTC (10:26 local time in India, 11:26 in Myanmar, 7:56 Bulgarian time) at a depth of 10 km. The epicenter was located 154 km east of the city of Aizawl in the Indian state of Mizoram, with a population of about 265,000, and 36 km south-southwest of the city of Mawlayk in Myanmar, where about 44,500 people live.
There are currently no reports of casualties or serious damage, but local authorities are conducting inspections for damage to infrastructure in the affected areas.
The region is highly seismically active due to faults on the Indo-Burma tectonic zone. Experts recall that earlier this year a powerful earthquake between Myanmar and Thailand caused serious damage and casualties.
