Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has met British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London, world agencies reported, quoted by BTA.

The meeting came as London moves closer to recognizing a Palestinian state.

The two leaders discussed the “urgent need to end the appalling suffering and starvation in Gaza“, a spokesman for “10 Downing Street“ said.

Abbas welcomed the UK's commitment to recognize a Palestinian state at the annual session of the UN General Assembly in New York, unless Israel changes course, he said the spokesman.

Several countries, including France, have already announced their intention to recognize the Palestinian state during the General Assembly.

During the meeting with Abbas, Starmer welcomed his commitment to reform the Palestinian state.

Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog is also arriving in the UK, and his visit will last from today until Friday. During his meetings on British territory, Herzog will focus on the release of the hostages held by "Hamas" in Gaza, in parallel with other political issues, the president's office announced, explaining that he will meet with MPs, media representatives and others. The visit is also intended to show solidarity with the Jewish community, which is facing attacks in the face of a wave of anti-Semitism.

The flotilla of ships heading to the Gaza Strip to break the Israeli blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinians said that one of its ships was hit in a suspected drone attack, world agencies reported.

The strike caused a fire on board the vessel, which was quickly extinguished. The attack took place in the Tunis area.

The Tunisian National Guard, however, said that it had not detected any drone in the area. According to the Guard, initial findings in connection with the incident are that a fire broke out among the life jackets on board the ship while it was 50 miles from the port of Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia. An investigation has been launched into the case.

Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg is also traveling on one of the ships that left Barcelona last week.
