"Allergic rhinitis is a disease that caused by allergic inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose, which is due to various allergens that fall on the mucous membrane through the air, Dr. Snezhana Yosifova, an allergist at Lozenets University Hospital, told BNR:
"There is a year-round allergic rhinitis, the causes of which are micro-mites of house dust or the so-called. mites, pet dander and molds and spores.
Another large group is seasonal allergic rhinitis, which is caused by tree and grass pollens, explained Dr. Yosifova.
According to her, the main signs of hay fever are frequent, repeated sneezing. Also itching in the nose, palate, nasopharynx and ears. Blockage of the nose with partial or complete obstruction, secretions from the nose, of a different nature.
Dr. Yosifova specified that patients over 65 years of age can rarely trigger a seasonal allergic reaction to pollen. But there are such cases, although the disease affects young people more often.
"A large percentage of patients with pollen allergy are cross-allergic to foods of plant origin, consumed raw, especially during the pollen season. These are different types of nuts, fruits, vegetables, plant spices and others.
Cross-allergy is caused by common allergens in food and pollen. Itching, swelling in the oral cavity, rarely urticaria or allergic gastritis or colitis occur.
Treatment of seasonal rhinitis is symptomatic when the first symptoms appear. In the off-season, it is recommended to conduct immunotherapy with the relevant allergen according to a special scheme, Dr. Yosifova from "Lozenets" hospital also pointed out.
