A rescue operation for Lake Srebarna. Several institutions worked together for two months to prevent the lake in the nature reserve from drying up, bTV reported.
After the decision of the crisis headquarters to save Lake Srebarna - an unprecedented rescue operation begins - with pumps and pipes. Over 3 million cubic meters of water are directed from the Danube River to the lake in two months.
„What we as an institution have never done, units with hydro pumps, with which water was transferred from a distance of somewhere 300-400 meters to the spillway of the lake“, said Daoud Ibryam, director of the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water-Ruse.
The first alarm signal that the lake is drying up was given by the mayor of the village of Srebarna.
„I noticed that the water in the reserve is dropping rapidly, this is the heat, the rapid evaporation of the water, it was dropping by nearly 30 cm per day“, said Georgi Ivanov, mayor of the village of Srebarna.
Fortunately, biodiversity is not affected by the drought.
„It is favorable for waterfowl, "We can see even now, there is a large gathering of pelicans, grey geese, various types of ducks, which due to the low level are much easier to obtain food," said Momchil Petrov, chief expert at the "Srebarna" Managed Reserve.
The Environmental Inspectorate in Ruse plans to build a pumping station that will transfer water from the Danube River to the lake all year round.
