Tsvetlin Yovchev: SANS is turning into a trade

However, the real debate should be what exactly the services should represent - what is their role, structure and accountability

Former SANS Chairman Tsvetlin Yovchev sharply criticized what is happening around the special services in our country and insisted on a legislative change that would limit political influence on them. In the program “In Focus” Yovchev commented on the appointment of a new head of SANS, the state of national security and the need for a modern defense policy.

Regarding the vote in parliament, with which deputies will now elect the heads of DAR, SANS and DATO, Yovchev warned that the struggles between the institutions will lead to new legal changes. – There will probably be a change in the law – and it will not be the last. The real debate, however, should be what exactly the services should be - what is their role, structure and accountability", said Yovchev.

The former chairman of SANS described the process of appointing the new leadership of the services as a dangerous political struggle. According to him, this undermines trust in the institutions and makes them vulnerable.

"The problem is that all this is turning into commerce here", Yovchev pointed out, refusing to give an assessment of Denyo Denev.

According to the former head of SANS, in order for the agency to be less "attractive" for political forces, a precise change in the law should be made. "SANS should only work on crimes against the Republic. "No wiretapping, no threats, which are often used for political purposes," he was categorical.

Yovchev also commented on the topic of security in the context of new military technologies. He described the idea of building a drone shield over Bulgaria as "necessary, although overdue."

"Yes, this is possible, but we must start as quickly as possible and with a clear concept, consistent with new technologies. Not only Bulgaria, but the entire EU and even NATO do not have an adequate defense doctrine in the new conditions," Yovchev emphasized.
