The Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) is preparing another increase in the prices of water and sewerage services from January 1, 2026, by an average of over 2.62% for the country, which will be a blow to people's incomes and will cause their just anger.

The Regulator's proposal comes after a year in which those affected by the water shortage in the country reached half a million, thousands went to protests, and the work to strengthen the infrastructure is far from what is necessary to give a lasting and secure effect on overcoming the water crises. Investment plans are not being implemented, efficiency indicators are not being met, and total water losses remain over 60% for the fifth consecutive year.

Therefore, we insist that EWRC suspend the procedure for increasing the prices of water and sanitation services from January 1, 2026, to bring the pricing mechanism into line with the new Water Law, which is in the National Assembly, and to conduct the necessary consultations with the Water and Sanitation Holding regarding the implementation of the investment programs of the individual water and sanitation operators.

This was stated in his position sent to the media by Delyan Peevski, leader of the Democratic Rights Party - New Beginning. Here are some more of his words:

Otherwise, we will attack the increase in the price of water in the Court, as we did with the decision of the Administrative Court of Sofia regarding the unjustified increase in parking prices in Sofia, as a result of which the Administrative Court - Sofia City declared it null and void.

It is the responsibility of all institutions to limit the pressure of rising prices on people in a year of such an important transformation. The transition to the common European currency is a challenge in which the state must be a partner and support for it to be implemented in the best and most qualitative way for people.
