Mitov on our joining the Peace Council: We cannot run away from US initiatives

When such a serious geopolitical initiative is formed under American leadership, it is better to be at the table than part of the menu

The US is our main geopolitical ally and we cannot run away from initiatives that they have undertaken, said the Minister of Interior in resignation and Deputy Chairman of GERB Daniel Mitov in the program “Sunday 150“ on the Bulgarian National Radio regarding Bulgaria's accession to the Peace Council under the patronage of the United States of America (USA).

Mitov commented that the decision to sign the document was taken legitimately with a mandate from the Council of Ministers, subject to ratification by the parliament.

“When such a serious geopolitical initiative is formed under American leadership, it is better to be at the table than part of the menu“, Mitov said.

According to him, not joining at such a moment is more like self-exclusion than taking a neutral position. He added that Bulgaria is now part of something that will develop in the future.

It is too early, as politicians, to comment on something that does not exist, said Daniel Mitov about Rumen Radev's political project.

He noted that at the moment all we know is that Rumen Radev is no longer president and there is no way to know whether he will form a party or head a coalition, what program and agenda for society he will have.

Regarding the closure of the Commission for Combating Corruption, adopted so far at first reading in parliament, Mitov indicated that the Ministry of Interior and the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime are ready to structure such a department. However, he noted that there is a problem with the physical accommodation of the commission's employees, whose activities are planned to be transferred to the General Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

For the work of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 2025, Daniel Mitov reported many times more seized cocaine, cannabis and fentanyl compared to previous years, as well as 70% less migration pressure.

He also emphasized road safety, saying that the measures are already yielding results, but time is needed. Mitov said that last year there was a 20% increase in traffic through Bulgaria, as well as a 40% increase in heavy goods traffic, and the number of deaths was 22 fewer compared to 2024.
