What is happening right now in the Black Sea has a huge importance for maritime security in general. The ongoing events in the Black Sea require daily monitoring, given that their ramifications extend far beyond the security architecture of the Black Sea Basin.

„We believe that what is happening in the Black Sea right now is of great importance not only for this war, but also for maritime security in general. Attention should be paid to the Black Sea every day, because something new is happening there every day, which completely changes the security architecture and the overall security environment in the world, not only in the Black Sea. This was said by Andriy Zagorodniuk, Chairman of the Center for Defense Strategies, Minister of Defense of Ukraine (2019-2020), during the discussion at the Second Black Sea Security Conference of the International Crimean Platform, which is being held in Sofia.

At the conference, the official part of which is on April 15 at the Military Club in Sofia, it was also discussed about attracting commercial manufacturers to Ukraine.

„There is a body of historical evidence that clearly demonstrates that, in terms of war, a less resourceful country engaged in asymmetric action is more likely to win against a more powerful aggressor. Ukraine is now following such an approach, which once again underlines the need to continue, if not increase, international military assistance to Ukraine,” said Dr Denis Gyllenspor, Associate Professor of Security Policy and Strategy, Swedish Defense University, former Force Commander of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

„When it comes to partners, it's not just about countries. I think there is potential to attract more commercial companies to provide support,” he said, adding that the world community should also limit the capacity of Russia's seaports in the war against Ukraine.

„Certain measures must be taken to counter Russia, especially in the Black Sea region”. This was stated by the Inspector General of the Chief Inspectorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Admiral Igor Voronchenko.

„As for what needs to be done directly in the Black Sea region, it is that the A2 area needs to be expanded, which will prevent the Russians from increasing their capacity both in the Caspian Sea and in other seas roads in the continental part of the country. Yes, there are critical points that need to be suppressed. These are mainly communication technologies, logistics, as well as such sensitive technologies that would prevent Russia from advancing in the production of new weapons and new combat systems, he said.

According to Igor Voronchenko, this is a key direction and requires a quick decision on the course of action. He also emphasized the need for means to destroy the enemy. “Secondly, when it comes to weapons, the more things change, the more they stay the same. So there are many means of destroying the enemy at sea. These are torpedoes, mines that can be used in distant areas where Russia is still dominant. A complex approach to the combination of modern technologies is needed in order to achieve the greatest possible effect that will give some results. I think this will not have much effect on Russian society because they have a very serious and in my opinion incurable “disease”. But yes, it can influence the decision of the strategic command of Russia and the military-political leadership”, explained Voronchenko.
