On July 22, the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office and the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office were notified by the executive director of the University general hospital for active treatment “Alexandrovska“ EAD, that the acceptance of corpses for storage, for autopsies and forensic examinations in the Clinic of Forensic Medicine and Deontology of the hospital is stopped, because the capacity of the corpse storage in the clinic is exhausted. The problem has been reported to other institutions.

This is stated in the letter of acting chief prosecutor Borislav Sarafov to acting minister of health Galya Kondeva with a copy to acting prime minister Dimitar Glavchev, the prosecutor's office announced.

In the document, he refers them to the need to take immediate measures to promptly carry out forensic medical examinations appointed by the pre-trial proceedings authorities on the territory of Sofia and the region.

„Approaching with understanding the critical situation that has arisen in the hospital, I express great anxiety and worry about the decision made,” Borislav Sarafov states in his letter. He emphasizes that this will not only create extreme difficulties in the work on pre-trial proceedings in the territory of Sofia and the district, but may even block it if it comes to an objective impossibility to order the performance of forensic medical examinations in cases of causing death and bodily harm.

„The organization and activity of medical institutions should not hinder investigations in criminal cases for crimes of a general nature, even more so for serious intentional crimes and the related forensic medical examinations”, emphasizes Borislav Sarafov.

He insists that all necessary actions be taken urgently to overcome the critical situation and to carry out medical examinations in medical facilities in Sofia according to medical standards.

Borislav Sarafov expects to be notified of the actions taken by the executive authority as soon as possible, as the further work of the pre-trial proceedings in Sofia and the prevention of the risk of failure of the investigations will depend on this.
