Political scientist: The party system is exhausted

The president wanted to show distance from Kalin Stoyanov, pointed out Dimitar Ganev

There is no government that is not formed through pressure from politicians, from economic factors. Both Mrs. Kozhareva's cabinet, and Mr. Glavchev's cabinet, and the next regular cabinet will be a consequence of various factors that put pressure on the people who make decisions about personnel policy.

This is what the political scientist from "Trend" said. Dimitar Ganev in an interview for "Focus".

The political tension that has accumulated in recent weeks around the figure of Kalin Stoyanov and his association with Delyan Peevski, according to him, led to the decision for the president to hand Gorica Grancharova a mandate to form a government.

"The president wanted to show distance from Kalin Stoyanov. However, this was not successful and tensions continued to build. The next move was made by Boyko Borisov, who, realizing that this could also reflect on GERB, preferred to remove this political tension. I believe that in the end these facts will lead to a resolution and Kalin Stoyanov will not be present as a minister. In this way, at least this episode of the saga called "Minister of the Interior" will end, without claiming that this will be the last episode, commented the political scientist.

According to Dimitar Ganev, the party system has been exhausted in recent years. "To the extent that we not only had the lowest voter turnout in this election, but far lower than the lowest recorded in the last 34 years. We are in a trend of erosion in the participation of citizens in the electoral process, which in itself opens a huge vacuum for a new or new political projects in the next few years”, he stated.

"The average voter turnout in Bulgaria for the last two decades is about 3.5 million people. Only 2.2 million people voted in the last election. "Imagine what a vacuum it is. None of today's political leaders can fill this vacuum. In the upcoming elections, we will not register a higher turnout. We will probably register even lower”, predicts the political scientist.

There are two options for solving this case study. "One option is new attempts at messianism – one, two, three or more to change the face of the party system in some way. A second option is to question whether the parliamentary model has not been exhausted and to look for a new constitutional model for the country, which would include a much more serious concentration of power in the presidential institution. However, I don't think that this will in any way solve our problems in the long term, Ganev added.

The more likely scenario, according to him, is to create a regular cabinet, which, however, will not solve the political crisis. "I don't think that this regular cabinet will in any way heal the party system. We will still continue to wallow in the quagmire of this political crisis, at least for another year or two, until one of the two options is decided or there is no radical transformation of our party system. I don't see even small signs of a resolution to this crisis. The parties that will have parliamentary representation in the next National Assembly are not those that can bring enthusiasm, hope and something that will give a new impetus to the party system, Dimitar Ganev also said.
