Option: Former fire chief takes over the Ministry of Interior?

There has been a lot of speculation about the ministerial chair in the power department in recent days

Chief Commissioner Nikolay Nikolov is among the most likely names for the future Minister of Internal Affairs to replace Kalin Stoyanov, revealed “Trud news”.

Nikolov was a long-term director of “Fire safety and population protection” from 2006 to 2022, and after his retirement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs system, he initially became an adviser on disaster risk reduction to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, and was subsequently appointed by Galab Donev as Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs. His last professional position was an advisor to the former head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Kalin Stoyanov.

Conversations with him were confirmed unofficially to sources from the Council of Ministers. Nikolov himself, when asked for a comment, does not deny that a similar dialogue was conducted with him. He was laconic in his speech, deliberately refusing to comment on the current dramas surrounding the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and he also did not deny that he is a serious option for a future minister. “We will talk later“, he said.

There has been a lot of speculation about the ministerial chair in the power department in recent days. Thus, for example, the figure of the former interior minister during the Radev and Galab Donev offices, Ivan Demerdzhiev, was also mentioned, but he categorically denied it.

Among the possible options for Interior Minister are also Stoyan Temelakiev, the current deputy of Kalin Stoyanov. He was fired during the “non-coalition” after the protests against the BFS and the subsequent excesses, but in April he was reinstated. The other commanders - Hristo Stefanov and Tony Todorov were also discussed, as well as Atanas Ilkov, head of the National Police.

As for the other ministers in the draft cabinet, which Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev should present to the president on Monday, no significant changes are expected, especially in the most important departments. With the exception of the fact that Glavchev will most likely refuse to combine the position of foreign minister, as the previous deputy foreign minister Ivan Kondov, a long-time career diplomat, will most likely become such. The current Prime Minister himself stated at the beginning of the week to his colleagues in the Council of Ministers that if it were up to him, he would not replace any of them, but after his meeting with President Radev, he clearly hinted that he would remove Kalin Stoyanov.
