As a result of years of political instability and a series of caretaker governments, Bulgaria was late with the information campaign about the euro and the result of this is visible - political populism, which leads to increased anxiety, uncertainty and hesitation about the need to adopt the euro as the main currency in Bulgaria among some Bulgarian citizens, said the Speaker of the National Assembly (NA) Natalia Kiselova.
She spoke with the President of the European Parliament (EP) Roberta Metzola within the framework of a conference of the presidents of the parliaments of the countries of the European Union (EU) in the Hungarian capital Budapest. Information about their meeting was announced by the press center of the National Assembly.
According to Kiselova, the introduction of the euro is the last and important step for the full European integration of our country.
She pointed out that the representatives of the political forces in parliament, who are there by the will of the people and have received the trust of the voters, are the ones who must dispel the fears of the people and convince them that the Eurozone provides a better perspective for the development of the country and business, for attracting investments, increasing their incomes and better working conditions.
Natalia Kiselova pointed out that Bulgarian citizens made the choice to be part of the EU more than 30 years ago and that choice is not in doubt.
"Bulgaria has come a long and very difficult path, a lot of effort has been made to fulfill the commitments related to the introduction of the single European currency," she said and added that this is why the government and the BNB have submitted the application for extraordinary reports from the European Commission (EC) and the European Central Bank (ECB), which are expected to confirm the fulfillment of the criteria for our country's accession to the Eurozone.
For her part, Roberta Mezzola assured that Bulgaria can count on the support of European institutions in connection with the adoption of the euro as the main currency.
She pointed out that it is a matter of national policies how participation in the single currency union should be promoted so that citizens are convinced that this is a step in the right direction.
