Vitosha turned white - May snow covered the mountain

The weather in the mountains is cloudy and foggy, with intense precipitation

Winter has surprisingly returned to the highest mountain parts of Bulgaria. At the moment, snow is falling on Cherni Vrh, which is already forming a snow cover. Footage published by Meteo Bulgaria shows how the white blanket covers the peaks of Vitosha.

According to the forecasts of the weather forecasters, the precipitation will continue in the next 48 hours. For today, May 25, a red code has been declared for intense precipitation in parts of three districts - Blagoevgrad, Smolyan and Pazardzhik. An orange code is in force for the districts of Blagoevgrad, Kyustendil, Sofia-region, Plovdiv, Kardzhali, Haskovo, Lovech and Pleven. A yellow code has been declared for the rest of the country.

The weather in the mountains is cloudy and foggy, with intense precipitation. Above 2000 meters above sea level, the rain turns into snow. The maximum temperature at 1200 meters is expected to be around 8 degrees, and at 2000 meters - around 3 degrees.

Meteorologists predict that only on Monday will the precipitation gradually weaken, first stopping in the western parts of the country. In Eastern and Northeastern Bulgaria, the rainy weather will last longer.

The unusual May cold snap is a consequence of an active Mediterranean cyclone passing through the Aegean Sea, which also brings significantly lower than usual temperatures for the end of spring.
