Landslides and floods kill at least 22 people in northeast India

The Indian Meteorological Department predicts more rainfall in these areas in the coming days

Mudslides and flash floods caused by days of continuous monsoon rains in northeast India have killed at least 22 people, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA, citing local authorities.

Five people died today in the state of Assam when their houses collapsed.

In the neighboring state of Arunachal Pradesh, which borders China, seven people drowned yesterday after their car was swept away in a flood. Two more people drowned in separate incidents in the same state.

Eight people have been killed in the bad weather in the states of Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya over the past 24 hours.

In Assam, authorities have cut off electricity in several areas to reduce the risk of electrocution, said the state's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The heavy rains have also caused flooding in many areas of the state's capital, Guwahati. The waterlogging caused power outages last night and authorities closed many educational institutions.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast more rainfall in these areas in the coming days.
