We want a referendum!: Residents of Plovdiv protested against the introduction of the euro

Citizens gathered at Saedinenie Square to support the preservation of the Bulgarian lev

In Plovdiv, residents of the city protested against plans to introduce the euro in Bulgaria from January 1, 2026, BTA reported.

Citizens gathered at "Saedinenie" Square to support the preservation of the Bulgarian lev and demanded a referendum on the introduction of the euro from January 1, 2026.

The protesters waved Bulgarian flags and held up posters with slogans "Eurofeudals, stop stealing from us", "Eurointegration has melted the nation", "The Eurozone today - a war zone tomorrow". The protesters chanted “No to the euro“ and "Resign".

Today we are here to preserve the Bulgarian lev, we do not want the euro imposed on Bulgaria, the government denied us the right to vote, denied a referendum and we insist on a referendum, Radoslav Dimitrov, one of the organizers of the protest, told BTA. According to him, if we enter the eurozone, there will be inflation.

We want a referendum to be held and the people to be asked whether they want the lev or the euro, said one of the protest participants. We are afraid of high inflation, which is already a fact, but it is hidden. We all feel in our pockets that inflation is rising, and in just a few days the price of electricity will jump, he added. Another protester said he was fighting to protect the Bulgarian lev and to protect the sovereignty of our country.

The protest at "Unity" Square in Plovdiv began with the Bulgarian anthem and a prayer, and then continued with speeches by protesters.
