The public procurement for the construction of Terminal 3 - the largest investment in public infrastructure in Bulgaria - will start tomorrow, and the capital's airport will be able to become the first 5-star airport in the region.
This was stated to bTV by Jesus Caballero - CEO of "Sof Connect", operator of "Vasil Levski" Airport, quoted by news.bg.
He pointed out that this is a 500 million leva investment not only in the construction of the terminal, but also additional parallel investments. The summer of 2026 A contractor is expected to be selected, construction to begin in the fall and the terminal to open by April 2031.
Caballero said that three companies operate at the airport as ground operators and the body that oversees their work is the Civil Aviation Authority.
Blocked passengers in a sleeve at Sofia Airport forced an emergency meeting to be convened by MTS
Nearly 300 passengers from a flight arriving from London were blocked for nearly an hour in the sleeve
"I proposed to the Ministry of Transport a procedure to improve the quality of services. "Following the incident where a large number of passengers had to wait in the aisle upon arrival from London, from this week we have a very streamlined process for third-country passengers to disembark and exit quickly," he said.
He said Terminal 2 was developed in the 1990s and does not allow for the mixing of passengers from and outside the Schengen area. When Terminal 3 is built, this issue will be resolved.
Caballero noted that passengers arriving from outside the Schengen area will be taken to the terminal by bus.
Regarding the high baggage fees that low-cost airlines charge, Caballero said: "When you fly with low-cost airlines, you know you are flying at low prices, but there are other inconveniences. What we are trying to do at the airport is to try to provide a pleasant experience at the Terminal. We are opening new retail spaces, offering new services".
He assured that they are working diligently to open flights to New York.
"We have over 50,000 passengers traveling there indirectly with a transfer. This is enough to open such a flight. We are also talking to the Chamber of Commerce in the States and the US Embassy in Sofia to open this destination, but the decision is in the hands of the airlines," explained Caballero.
