Assoc. Prof. Petar Cholakov: After passing as a roller, now Peevski is starting to pave the way

He is moving not just towards the executive branch, but towards the overall leadership of the party and political system, he explained

"Assen Vassilev's task will be difficult. There are other figures in the PP who could be good leaders of this political force". This opinion was expressed to the Bulgarian National Radio by political scientist Assoc. Prof. Petar Cholakov.

Kiril Petkov has taken his responsibility and I think he will be consistent, he added. And he reminded that last year half of the PP-DB voters withdrew their support for them because of the government together with GERB and MRF. Now there are corruption scandals that in no way help the Euro-Atlantic opposition in parliament, the political scientist commented.

"When you see that electorally you are going so headlong down, it is obvious that some serious commitments must be made and some very serious changes must be made at the top of these political forces".

According to him, the withdrawal of the DB from the coalition will only help the opponents of these political forces. Individually, they will be extremely weak, explained Assoc. Prof. Cholakov.

"The main reason why Zhelyazkov's government seems stable is because the opposition is fragmented".

According to him, it would be a mistake if the PP and DB decide to go their separate ways:

"If processes of disintegration begin in the PP-DB, let's all give up hope, at least from the point of view of the voters, who see in these formations perhaps the only representative of the authentically pro-European forces in the National Assembly".

The vote of no confidence will not be successful - no one is under any illusions, the political scientist was categorical in an interview for the program "Predi visi".

According to him, it is in the interest of both Borisov and Peevski to stick together. "This is the backbone of this government", he believes.

The opposition is divided among themselves, there is no way to form a common front to start to overthrow the government, commented Petar Cholakov. According to him, if there are upheavals, they will be after January 1, 2026. Then everyone will start to outwit and act brutally, he expressed his opinion.

According to him, however, there is one factor that is key to the cohesion of the Borisov - Peevski tandem - this is President Radev.

If Borisov and Peevski split up, President Radev's project will be much easier to implement, Cholakov emphasized and added: "Godot will finally land". According to him, if the president enters the game, he will make the game of Borisov and Peevski very difficult. He will attract serious support from "Vazrazhdane", "Velichye" and MECH, the permanent non-voters - as well.

"The president's main driving force is not his Eurosceptic positions, which are too soft, the main thing is that he declared himself as the last true opponent of the "GERB - DPS" model. This is the main opponent of both Borisov and Peevski".

It is most profitable for Peevski to behave with Borisov and govern, because this is how the portions are distributed in the state - quietly, meekly and calmly, the political scientist noted:

"After he flattened the political terrain like a roller, he is now moving to the second stage - asphalting the terrain - on one side tobacco is planted, and on the other side coffee and media flows float, and in the middle he passes and moves not just towards the executive branch, but towards the complete leadership of the party and political system. This can happen together with Borisov, so that they can distribute their portions together".
